South Carolina Bartender Certification

South Carolina Bartender Certification

How old does a person need to be to bartend in South Carolina?

If you’re 18, you’re welcome to join the bartending world. You can serve wine and beer in sealed containers. But sorry, you can’t touch the liquor yet.

Over 18 but under 21? So close, yet so far. You can serve open containers of beer, wine, and distilled spirits.

But ultimately, if you’re under 21 you can’t be a bartender.

Until then you can read up on a few things to keep your dream alive, my friend. We believe in you!

Do you need a license to be a bartender in South Carolina?

The great debate of whether or not you need a bartending license or certificate in South Carolina, or anywhere else in the United States, isn’t a new topic.

Technically, you’re not required to gain any sort of exact license or certificate. But your future employer will probably ask you to prove your training in the safe service of alcohol.

According to our team of industry veterans, here are the most common:

  • TIPS. You can do this on your own and be ready for your interview!
  • ServSafe. Go for the managerial level if you’re wanting to reach for the lead positions.
  • Learn2Serve. Good for those who also want to work in the kitchen.

There are a few other general requirements that may be helpful for you if you’re thinking about picking bartending for your career.

You should be able to handle all sorts of different types of customers. Standing for long periods should be within your physical abilities. And lastly, you don’t require these, but all good bartenders have them–communication and interpersonal skills.

Is it legal for bartenders to drink on the job in South Carolina?

Regardless of where you might bartend, in the state or throughout the United States, it’s illegal to drink when you’re bartending.

Of course, there’s going to be a time when someone asks you to take a shot. Use water, sweet tea, or water with bitters to mimic shots of vodka or whiskey.

You’ll also need to and are encouraged to try the drinks you’re serving. Knowing your product is different from getting drunk at work though. And managers often can tell when you’re trying to catch a buzz from sampling, so don’t even try.

Where are the best places to bartend?

Home is where the heart is. And that’s in South Carolina.

But there are some cities compared to others that put you in a better position to make more money in tips. Here are some of the best types of bars to work:

South Carolina is one of those states in the U.S. that restricts the sale of alcohol on Sundays.

But some counties still allow beer and wine sales like Richland, Georgetown, Charleston, Beaufort, Horry, Berkeley, Dorchester, Newbery, and York. So if you’re wanting to factor that into your ability to make money or schedule, keep Sunday sales and where you work in mind.
