Gainesboro is part of the Cookeville, Tennessee Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Gainesboro is located at 36°21′35″N 85°39′17″W / 36.35972°N 85.65472°W / 36.35972; -85.65472 (36.359705, -85.654657), approximately 15 miles northwest of Cookeville.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.8 square miles (4.7 km), of which 1.6 square miles (4.1 km) are land and 0.3-square-mile (0.78 km) (14.29%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 879 people, 373 households, and 208 families residing in the town. The population density was 562.5 people per square mile (217.6/km²). There were 430 housing units at an average density of 275.2 per square mile (106.4/km²).
