Havre de Grace (/ˌhævər dɨˈɡreɪs/; sometimes abbreviated HdG) is a city in Harford County, Maryland, United States. Located at the mouth of the Susquehanna River and the head of the Chesapeake Bay, Havre de Grace is named after the port city of Le Havre, France, which was first named Le Havre de Grâce, meaning in French “Haven of Grace.” As of the 2010 census, the city’s population was 12,952.
In 1789, the city was in serious consideration to be the permanent capital of the United States.
Havre de Grace is located at 39°32′54″N 76°5′51″W / 39.54833°N 76.0975°W / 39.54833; -76.0975 (39.548412, -76.097554) at the mouth of the Susquehanna River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.4 square miles (14 km), of which 4.0 square miles (10 km) is land and 1.4 square miles (3.6 km), or 25.23%, is water.
