Hytop is located at 34°54′17″N 86°5′12″W / 34.90472°N 86.08667°W / 34.90472; -86.08667 (34.904816, -86.086634).
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.3 square miles (6.0 km), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 315 people, 124 households, and 108 families residing in the town. The population density was 139.5 people per square mile (53.8/km²). There were 139 housing units at an average density of 61.5 per square mile (23.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96.19% White, 1.27% Native American, and 2.54% from two or more races. 0.32% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
