Long Grove is an affluent village located in Lake County, Illinois, approximately 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Chicago. As of the 2005 census, the village had a total population of 6,735. The village has strict building ordinances to preserve its “country atmosphere.”
Long Grove is located at 42°12′9″N 88°0′23″W / 42.2025°N 88.00639°W / 42.2025; -88.00639 (42.202504, -88.006448).
According to the 2010 census, the village has a total area of 12.71 square miles (32.9 km), of which 12.48 square miles (32.3 km) (or 98.19%) is land and 0.24 square miles (0.62 km) (or 1.89%) is water.
Before 1840, a Yankee, John Gridley, settled at a minor trail crossing deep in Long Grove, a large grove of oaks standing in bluestem prairie along the southern boundary of Lake County.
