Paynesville is a small city in Stearns County, Minnesota, United States, on Lake Koronis in the central part of the state. The population was 2,432 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Cloud Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The site of Paynesville was first officially put on the map in 1857 with the founding of a post office, post mastered by Edwin E. Payne, who served for only a few months. Thirty years later, as the Soo Line Railroad arrived in the area, a second post office was founded right near the tracks, and a second separate village developed, named New Paynesville. These were separate villages. The original Paynesville and New Paynesville merged into “Paynesville” in January 1905. The community was named for Edwin Paynes, a local settler.
Paynesville is located along the North Fork of the Crow River and Lake Koronis. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km), all of it land.
