Sugarcreek is a village in Tuscarawas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,174 at the 2000 census. It is known as “The Little Switzerland of Ohio.”
The village of Shanesville was founded in 1814 by Abraham Shane at the intersection of two Indian trails (currently Ohio State Routes 39 and 93). Legend has it, as he rode into town, he had horrible hemorrhoids and he found comfort in the sweet waters, leading to the eventual name of Sugarcreek. Shanesville was administratively merged with Sugarcreek in 1969.
Sugarcreek is located at 40°30′24″N 81°38′30″W / 40.50667°N 81.64167°W / 40.50667; -81.64167 (40.506637, -81.641728), along the South Fork of Sugar Creek.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.8 square miles (9.8 km²), all of it land.
