The Path of Alcohol Through the Body

Responsible ServingWhen an alcoholic beverage is consumed it passes down the esophagus, through the stomach, and into the small intestine. It is absorbed through the lining of the mouth, throat, stomach, and small intestine.

Seventy-five to eighty percent (75-80%) of the alcohol enters the bloodstream through the walls of the small intestine. The speed of the absorption is greater from the small intestine than the stomach. Alcohol is water-soluble and the bloodstream rapidly transports the alcohol throughout the body where it is absorbed into bodily tissues in proportion to their water content.

Ninety percent (90%) of the alcohol is eliminated by the liver. A healthy body eliminates about 1/2 oz of pure alcohol per hour.
