Hinesville is also known to have been the home of three signers of the Declaration of Independence: Lyman Hall, George Walton and Button Gwinnett. The city is the county seat of Liberty County. Nearby Fort Stewart and the principal city of Hinesville together comprise the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metropolitan statistical area, which comprises all of Liberty County and neighboring Long County.
