Poteau ( /ˈpoʊtoʊ/ POH-toh) is a city and county seat of Le Flore County, Oklahoma, United States.. The population was 8,520 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Smith, Arkansas-Oklahoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. Carl Albert State College is located in Poteau.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.7 square miles (82 km), of which 28.6 square miles (74 km) is land and 3.0 square miles (7.8 km), or 9.54%, is water.
The city is located in the valley below Cavanal Hill, the “World’s Highest Hill”.
As of the census of 2000, there were 7,939 people, 3,013 households, and 2,042 families residing in the city. The population density was 277.2 people per square mile (107.0/km²). There were 3,351 housing units at an average density of 117.0 per square mile (45.2/km²).
