Sophia (Σοφíα, Greek for “wisdom”) is a central idea in Hellenistic philosophy and religion, Platonism, Gnosticism, Orthodox Christianity, Esoteric Christianity, as well as Christian mysticism. Sophiology is a philosophical concept regarding wisdom, as well as a theological concept regarding the wisdom of the biblical God.
Sophia is honored as a Goddess of wisdom within the Neopagan and New Age movements, as well as within feminist-inspired Goddess spirituality. In Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christianity Sophia, or rather Hagia Sophia, Holy Wisdom is an expression of understanding of the Holy Spirit, (as in the dedication of the church of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul) and for example as in the Old Testament in the Book of Proverbs 9:1, but in no way in terms of pagan goddess worship. Some fringe gnostic Christian bodies may take a more New Age view of this, which the mainline Orthodox, Roman Catholic and other similar churches would most certainly not agree with.
