West Allis is a city in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 61,254 at the 2000 census.
The name of West Allis derives from Edward P. Allis, who started the Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company in the 19th century. The site of the town was located west of Allis’ plant. Originally, the community was called Honey Creek, which was changed to North Greenfield in the 1880s. In 1902 the area was incorporated as the Village of West Allis, and became the City of West Allis in 1906.
West Allis is located at 43°0′29″N 88°1′6″W / 43.00806°N 88.01833°W / 43.00806; -88.01833 (43.00, -88.02). The upper courses of the Root and Kinnickinnic Rivers flow through the city. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.4 square miles (30 km), of which, 11.4 square miles (30 km) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km) of it (0.18%) is water.
