Craft Your Own Valentine’s Day Cocktails (Romantic Recipes Included)

Craft Your Own Valentine’s Day Cocktails (Romantic Recipes Included)

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about how you can make your guests feel special. If you’re a bar owner or bartender, one great way to do that is by creating cocktails themed for the holiday of love.

Not sure where to start other than your regular old glass of red? Look no further; along with the team at Local Bartending School, I’ve got some delicious and romantic recipes here that are guaranteed to be a hit at any bar you’re serving at or running. Consider us the cupid for pairing up a cocktail with your guests.

Read on to learn more about making mixology magic happen–behind the bar, that is.

But before we get going, let’s learn a quick story from my bartender friend John. Luckily, you have me and the team at LBS so you won’t have to work as hard as he did. Poor dude.

John was a bartender at the hottest new bar in town and he thought he was ready for anything that came his way. But when Valentine’s Day rolled around, John quickly realized how wrong he had been! His customers were coming in expecting romantic cocktails to share with their loved ones, but unfortunately, John had no idea what any of them were.

John felt like an idiot as couples kept asking him to make something special and all he could do was shrug his shoulders.

To make matters worse, one couple had spent a ton of money on dinner and drinks only to leave without even enjoying the drinks they ordered because there wasn’t anything special about them.

The couple left a scathing review on Yelp claiming that it ruined their romantic evening out, which caused business at the bar to drop off significantly over the next few days.

This made John determined never to let this happen again; so after work each night he hit up every library and bookstore within a twenty-mile radius looking for books on cocktail recipes or bartending tips and tricks.

After weeks of hard work (and some trial-and-error) finally learned enough about mixology that by next Valentine’s Day, he could whip up all kinds of romantic cocktails for couples looking for something special! And business certainly picked up, plus John earned more than ever before in tips from happy couples who appreciated his newfound skills!

Aphrodite's Pomegranate-Lime French 75

pomegranate-lime-french-75-recipe

This romantic cocktail is the perfect way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with an elegant, flavorful twist on the classic French 75. Featuring the flavors of tart pomegranate and sweet lime, this bubbly beverage is sure to make your event or guest’s special!

To make Aphrodite’s Pomegranate-Lime French 75, you’ll need two ounces of gin, one ounce of freshly squeezed lime juice, one ounce of simple syrup, two ounces of pomegranate juice, and a few dashes of orange bitters.  Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake vigorously until chilled. Next, strain your mixture into a chilled champagne flute and top it off with brut sparkling wine or champagne. Garnish with a fresh pomegranate seed for added flavor and festive flair!

Honestly, the combination of citrusy lime with fragrant pomegranate makes this delicious cocktail light yet complex enough to enjoy at any time. But since it’s the season for love, I guess it’s romantic enough! (There’s a little Valentine’s Day flack for my non-romantic readers.)

The bubbly sparkling wine balances the sweetness from the pomegranate juice for just the right amount of tartness that will leave your couples (or singles or trios!)  wanting more. With its deep pink hue and fresh garnish this beautiful beverage looks as good as it tastes making it an ideal choice for a flirty celebration like Valentine’s Day.

So treat your special-someone-patrons to something extra special with this easy V-Day recipe, Aphrodite’s Pomegranate-Lime French 75!

The LOVEBUG Cocktail

This Valentine’s Day, why not surprise your special someone (ah-hem, I mean your guests) with a bite from the love bug liquor?

This classic romantic cocktail is incredibly simple to make. All you need is white cranberry juice, vodka, grenadine, and lemon-lime soda.

Simply mix two parts white cranberry juice with one part vodka, add a few drops of grenadine for color and sweetness, then finish it off with some refreshing lemon-lime soda. Top it all off with some fresh cherries for added decoration and flavor.

You can make it extra special for the guests who are nice to you by adding a few drops of sugar syrup for a little bit of sweetness and topping it off with some sweet maraschino cherries or a fresh edible flower as a garnish. Bonus points for a red sugar rim, though!

There’s no better way to say ‘I kinda like you, random stranger’ than with this special homemade cocktail! This romantic drink is bound to impress your lovey-dovey-eyed guests, just like a beautiful bouquet of roses would. It’s too bad their partner forgot the whole flower part. That’s when you come in with a drink, right!?

White cranberry juice adds a delicate fruity flavor, while the vodka and grenadine add depth and complexity that really bring the drink alive. To finish it off, the lemon-lime soda gives it an extra zing that will tantalize the taste buds.

Before we leave you, let’s garnish this all off. (See what I did there?)

Here’s how to create a few Valentine’s Day garnishes to replace the flowers your guest never got.

Zero or Low Alcohol Drinks for Your Non-Drinking Guests

Zero or Low Alcohol Drinks for Your Non-Drinking Guests

No, we’re not talking about those wussy mocktails you’re used to. We’re talking about real drinks with real flavor that just happen to have a lower alcohol content. Whether your guests are looking for non-alcoholic drinks for whatever reason or just a lower ABV option to sip on, there’s something on this list for everyone. So let’s get wasted—er, I mean, let’s get started, bartenders!

You have questions. I have answers.

  • What is a low-ABV cocktail?
    • Low-alcohol drinks contain between 3 and 10 percent ABV (alcohol-by-volume) or about 6 to 20 proof. For context, that’s about the same alcohol content as a glass of wine or half the strength of cocktails like martinis or margaritas. Some low-proof beverages are even lighter, with an alcohol content similar to beer. They typically feature mixer ingredients like juice or soda in larger volumes than liqueurs, wine, or beer.
  • What can replace alcohol in a mocktail?
    • Seltzer water, sparkling water, club soda, fruit juice, or tea can all replace alcohol in a mocktail. For more, read on!
  • What is the most popular mocktail?
    • The most popular mocktail is the Shirley Temple. But, we’re here to make sure you aren’t serving those anymore.
  • Why do people come to a bar looking for zero-proof drinks?
    • There are waves of folks opting to not drink. And that doesn’t mean they won’t still come to your bar. In fact, they may be more likely to stop in if there are a few drinks they can choose from. I’ve heard a ton of bartenders grope about making mocktails, but don’t! Here are some reasons why folks don’t drink:
      • They don’t want to. Simply put.
      • They are sober or venturing toward sobriety. They may also just want to do dry January!
      • Health reasons stemming from pregnancy to blood pressure.
      • It makes them sick.
      • They are allergic.

Story Time: I’ve made some of my best money serving folks non-alcoholic cocktails! One time, I was serving a couple and one of them sat down first. She told me she wasn’t drinking because she was expecting but she hadn’t told her spouse yet. How cute, right! So I made her a little mocktail and kept her secret until she was ready. I’ve also served people who are sober but haven’t told their friends. Remember, we’re not serving judgment, we’re serving delicious cocktails!

Grasshopper

grasshopper-cocktail

The Grasshopper is a minty-fresh drink that’s served in a martini glass and isn’t meant to be consumed quickly. Making it a perfect, refreshing choice for a sessionable cocktail.

What does it mean when a drink is sessionable?

  • When a beer, spirit, or cocktail is sessionable, it means it can be sipped on all day long. Why? There’s a lower alcohol percentage so your guests don’t get too drunk too fast. People like to session their drinks when they are: drinking for a long time (like at a wedding), have a low tolerance, or just like to pace themselves.

To get the full Grasshopper recipe, head to our list of refreshing cocktails.

Rosemary Paloma

rosemary-paloma

Bamboo

bamboo-low-abv-cocktail

The Bamboo is one of those cocktails that you can enjoy for hours on end. It’s not hard to make and requires just two ingredients: dry vermouth and sherry, plus bitters! • 1.5 ounces dry vermouth
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters

campari-spritz

Campari is an Italian aperitif made from a blend of herbs and spices. It’s often served with orange juice, but I like to mix it up with blood orange juice for a slightly sweeter flavor.

  • 1 blood orange juice
  • 1.5 oz Campari
  • 3 oz chilled Prosecco
  • 1.5 oz chilled grapefruit sparkling water

  • Half your blood orange get enough juice for .75 ounces. Save the second half for garnish. In your service glass (use a white white glass), add ice. Then add orange juice and campari. Lastly, top with Prosecco, sparkling water, and garnish.

  • 1.5 oz blanco tequila
  • .75 oz Lillet Rosé
  • .5 oz blood orange syrup
  • 1 oz lime juice, strained of any solids, from 2 limes

Americano

americano-cocktail

This classic cocktail is perfect for anyone who wants to drink without alcohol. The Campari, sweet vermouth and soda water come together in a refreshing way that can be enjoyed all day long but if you’re looking for something with more kick then go right ahead change it up by switching out some gin for your preferred spirit!

  • 1.5 oz sweet vermouth
  • Soda water
  • Orange twist, garnish

Instructions

  • Grab your highball glass and fill it with ice. Add sweet vermouth and Campari. Before you stir everything up, top with soda water. Finally, garnish with an orange twist.

Liqueur Spritz

Liqueurs are great additions to cocktails. They add flavor and sweetness, and can be used to change the flavor of a cocktail or to make it more complex.

Liqueurs are spirits that are full of flavors like and made with fruits, herbs, or spices. They are typically around 20% ABV. Liqueurs can be used in a variety of cocktails, or simply enjoyed on their own. Some popular liqueurs include amaretto, triple sec, and Grand Marnier.

Basically, this is recipe I’m about to share is so easy, if you know how to stir a a bowl of soup, you can make a St. Germain Spritz.

st-germain-recipe-low-abv

  • 2 oz St Germain

St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails, Shots, and Drinks: Recipes Just for Bartenders

St. Patrick’s Day Cocktails, Shots, and Drinks: Recipes Just for Bartenders

St. Patrick’s Day is coming up! That means a whopping 150% increase in beer and liquor sales.

And green makeup, a Leprechaun hat, and whatever random green stuff you can find in your junk drawer to adorn yourself with aren’t the only things you’ll need as a bartender on one of the biggest party days of the year.

You will 100% need some green beer. It’s sort of a staple. But, dare I say, it’s a boring staple.

Don’t be a boring bar or bartender! Keep the party going with festive, Irish-fun-filled, liquid luck—cocktail recipes for St. Patrick’s Day. And if you’re ready for it, a little flair never hurts!

Let’s get Shamrock-in’ I wouldn’t want to leave you Guinness-ing. Okay, enough with the puns.

1. Irish Coffee

irish-coffee-recipe
Image via Canva

What makes an Irish Coffee an Irish Coffee? You have to get a special blend of coffee beans from Ireland and then you—just kidding! What makes this coffee drink stand out from the rest is the Irish whiskey. We’re bartenders, not baristas!

This drink is easy to make and can turn any cold-weather St. Patrick’s day celebration into a warm, cozy party.

Is it hot in March where you live and work? Try an Irish Iced coffee variation with Irish cream and whiskey. Nobody likes a hot drink when they’re sweating, so don’t even try to suggest it.

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons packed brown sugar, to taste
  • 4 ounces strong, hot coffee
  • 1 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey
  • 1 ounce heavy cream, lightly whipped

Instructions

  • The brown sugar should be placed into a hot Irish coffee glass, mug, or something similar that’s heatproof. Add Irish Whiskey and coffee, then stir until solids are dissolved. By slowly pouring the cream over the back of a spoon, you should create a floating layer of lightly whipped heavy cream.

2. Green Beer

how-to-make-green-beer

In Chicago and cities where St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by the masses, you can’t swing a cat without hitting a glass of green beer.

This means whether or not you’re new to bartending, you’ll need to know how to make this nostalgic staple to celebrating the Irish.

Luckily, making this St. Patrick’s day drink is probably easier than your first bartending shift was (or ever will be.)

Ingredients

  • 12 ounces of  beer
  • 1-2 drop(s) green food coloring

Instructions

  • Go ahead and add 1-2 drops of green food coloring to your beer glass. Pour your beer, stir if needed, and serve!

3. St. Patrick’s Day Jello Shots

jello-shots-for-st-patricks-day
Image via Society19 | Recipe via Cookie Dough and Oven Mitt

There’s a reason why people wear that little shot glass around their neck on St. Patricks’ Day. And the reason is pretty simple. People take a lot of shots! So you’ll need one or two in your playbook to suggest.

These St. Patricks’ Day jello shots are brightly colored with hues of the Irish flag and are batched ahead of time so you can keep turning guests and making money.

Ingredients

  • 3 packets unflavored gelatin, divided for use
  • 2 cups water, divided for use
  • 7 oz sweet condensed milk
  • 1 cup chilled vanilla vodka, divided for use
  • 3 oz box green gelatin
  • 2-3 drops orange food coloring
  • Whipped cream and sprinkles, garnish

Instructions

  • Add 1 cup water to a small pan. Bring the water to a boil, then remove the pan from the heat. Stir in 1 packet of unflavored gelatin. Let gelatin dissolve completely. Stir in the green jello mix until it dissolves. Stir in the green jello mix until it dissolves. Add ⅓ cup of vodka. Stir well. Fill the bottom third of each shot glass with the green mixture. Put it in the freezer for about an hour or until the gelatin is firm.
  • Boil the remaining 2 packets of gelatin and stir until it’s all gone. Pour in the condensed milk and then two-thirds of the vodka, chilled. Stir.
  • Then, pour your white mixture into a bowl and chill, saving for later. Then, pour the rest of the white concoction into your shot glasses (two-thirds of the way now) and let chill for a half hour or so.
  • Bring out the mixture you were saving for later use. Heat it in a microwave so you can stir it up to be smooth. Once you can stir, add a few drops of orange food coloring. Stir until color is consistent. Finish off your jello shots by pouring in this orange layer. Chill for a half hour.
  • If you want, you can garnish with whipped cream and sprinkles for an added experience.

How to Invent Your Own Cocktail

How to Invent Your Own Cocktail

@6ixspot
@6ixspot

Trying to invent a cocktail? Whether you want a unique addition to your drink list or you’re crafting a signature cocktail for an event, thinking up your own delicious drink can seem like something that isn’t as easy as it should be. But don’t fear—with a few basic principles in mind, you can start whipping up your own, original cocktails in no time.

1. Think About Your Needs

One of the most common reasons to invent a new cocktail is as a signature cocktail for a wedding. So you’ve invented a wonderful cocktail that’s focused, balanced, and highlights its ingredients… but it takes twenty minutes and a blowtorch to make. That isn’t going to help you at a wedding. Take a minute to think about your cocktail’s home and function and decide what’s realistic.

2. Think About the Parts

Conventional wisdom and every cocktail book out there holds that there are three parts to any cocktail: the base, or spirit, the body, or mixer, and the aromatic. Obviously not everything adheres to that formula, but it’s helpful to keep in mind as you build. Your base defines what cocktail you’re making—let it shine, and be wary about mixing more than one. Aromatics, like bitters, syrups, and twists, may seem like an afterthought but can make a huge difference in the finished product.

3. Think About the Flavors

Before you start throwing ingredients in there, have a picture in your head of what you want the drink to taste like. You may not know exactly how to get there, but if you have a profile you’re going for, it will give you a goal and help you decide what fits and what doesn’t. Rather than toss things together and think “well that’s OK,” have a definite flavor in mind and try to achieve it.

4. Start with Standards

Not quite sure what flavor you want? Try starting with a tried-and-true cocktail and thinking about ways you could replace one or two ingredients in it. What would a Manhattan taste like with amaretto instead of angostura? What would a Cosmopolitan taste like with pomegranate juice instead of cranberry? By swapping out just one ingredient, you give yourself a solid base to start from.

5. Be Creative—But Don’t Overcrowd

Want to include a really unusual ingredient in your cocktail? That’s awesome, but plan to build the cocktail around it. One of the number one stumbling blocks on the road to a successful new cocktail is trying to do too much. Pick an ingredient to highlight in your cocktail—whether it’s something unusual itself, or you’re putting that creativity to serve a standard spirit. Build the cocktail to highlight that ingredient in an interesting way, and cut out anything that creates too much confusion.
